The Master Answers ...
Swamiji, can you please talk about incomplete actions in past lives? Do they really hinder spiritual growth?
The Master:
My dear friend, incomplete action takes place in the following circumstances: first, when it is done unconsciously (and almost everyone is more than 90% unconsciousness) and second, when an action is done half-heartedly. One then develops regret, suppressed feelings, thoughts and also desire.
Only an action done with detachment and selflessness, without expecting its fruit, becomes complete action. Whatever duties that fall under our responsibility should be fulfilled in accordance with the laws of nature. Otherwise, they become incomplete actions, and in a future and at times in the same incarnation, 'the test paper', as I call it, is set again and again until it is completed. In this way we are caught in a vicious circle.
In fact, as long as we have desires coupled with unconsciousness, selfishness, expectations, emotions, obsessions, regrets and guilt, our actions cannot be complete. Only the yogi who does action skilfully completes his action. He does his duty in accordance with dharma, does not expect the fruit of action, does not identify himself with the doer, for example, 'I did this' or 'I did that'. He has no regret for actions done or not done.
Yes, unfulfilled actions become like a burden while swimming across a river. Life is like a vast ocean, and one should be light while going through it. Therefore, learn the art and science of wisdom in action or skilful action under the guidance of an enlightened master.
